Fabric Maintenance and Protective Coating Remedials for a High Voltage Substation PASS Unit

Following the installation of a new PASS Unit at a high voltage substation, several areas of the asset were found to have sustained coating damage during installation. The affected areas included flanges, bolts and difficult-to-access pipework, leaving the equipment below the standard expected for newly installed critical infrastructure.

A further challenge arose because an ongoing dispute between the asset owner and the equipment manufacturer meant the original coating specification was unavailable. Any repair solution therefore needed to provide long-term protection while remaining fully compatible with the existing coating system.

TEXO Asset Integrity was appointed by a leading UK renewable energy operator to undertake a detailed fabric maintenance survey and develop a suitable remedial solution.

An experienced AMPP (NACE) Coating Supervisor completed a comprehensive inspection and produced both a condition assessment and remedial survey report. Based on these findings, TEXO specified and implemented a targeted coating repair programme using Humidur FPLT – a proven coating system compatible with a wide range of specifications and particularly suited to the silicone alloy construction of the PASS Unit when applied following ST2 surface preparation.

The remedial works included:

• Detailed inspection and condition assessment
• Surface preparation using ST2 hand preparation methods
• Application of Humidur FPLT protective coating
• Installation of protective black caps where practical to enhance corrosion resistance
• Final coating inspection and comprehensive completion report
• Safe execution using work-at-height equipment, PPE and RPE

The project was delivered by an experienced team of industrial coating specialists supported by a qualified Paint Inspector to ensure every repaired area met the required quality standards.

The remedial works successfully restored the integrity of the protective coating system, ensuring the newly installed PASS Unit was protected against corrosion and environmental exposure.

Despite the absence of the original paint specification, TEXO’s technical expertise enabled the team to identify a fully compatible coating system that met both the asset owner’s operational requirements and the equipment manufacturer’s expectations.

The project was completed within programme, with detailed inspection and coating reports providing full quality assurance, traceability and confidence in the long-term performance of the asset.
