Adding freezer space on the MRV Scotia in a 24-hour window

The client

The MRV Scotia vessel works for the Scottish government as a scientific research vessel in UK waters. The vessel was docking in Aberdeen harbour for 24 hours and asked us, at short notice, to provide additional freezer space.

The solution

By talking to the vessel personnel, we identified that there was an existing cold room that could be converted to a freezer by simply changing out the thermostat. We sourced and ordered the appropriate thermostat and sent our onshore refrigeration engineer to the vessel. We installed the thermostat and changed the settings on relevant components to ensure that freezer conditions would be operational when needed.

The result

The system was run up and monitored until required temperature was achieved. The client was taken to the unit so our engineer could explain the work. As the vessel was returning to sea within 24 hours, the First Engineer was also given instruction on how to revert the unit back to a cold room if required. The system was left operational and the vessel sailed with a fully functional freezer.
